With exam season in full swing, it’s completely natural to feel a mix of emotions, nerves, stress and uncertainty can all start to build. For many students, the need to juggle revision with other commitments can often feel an unmanageable task, but it is important to know you are not alone.

There are ways you can manage exam stress and approach revision with more confidence and calmness. It’s all about finding what works for you, one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to feeling prepared, so try not to put added pressure on yourself by comparing your revision approaches to others – find what works best for you and stick with it.

Students, What Can You Do?

Start with a plan. Take a look at your week and set aside dedicated time for revision.

Blocking out these moments in your schedule will help reduce last-minute panic and give you a clear structure to follow. Whether you plan each day or each week, having that routine can help keep distractions at bay and make things feel more manageable.

Focus on your trickier subjects first. You can’t do it all at once, so start with the subjects you find more difficult and the exams that are coming up first. Giving time to prepare will help you avoid last minute cramming and the feeling of panic.

Take regular breaks. You’ve heard of the saying ‘Take a Break, Have KitKat?’ So, take a break, go for a walk, get a drink, have some food… that short break away from your screen or books can make a huge difference. You’ll come back more focused, more determined and able to retain more information.

Don’t sacrifice your sleep. A good night’s sleep is essential for memory, concentration, and mood. Whilst it might be tempting to stay up revising into the early hours, your brain needs rest just as much as it needs revision. So, try and stick to a routine that includes enough downtime and rest.

Keep talking. Exams can be a lot, so it is important to keep talking about how you are feeling, if you are worried,  overwhelmed or stressed. Whether this is to a teacher, friend or family member, a simple conversation can make a big difference in how you are feeling and there are lots of people around you who are there to listen.

Stress Shouldn't Be Perceived Negatively

Feeling stressed is often a sign you care and want to do well. The key is learning how to manage stress so that it doesn’t take over. The strategies mentioned above are just suggestions, however it is important you find your own ways that work well for you. This will not only help you through exams but also prepare you for future challenges like job interviews, college or university or other big life changes.

Most importantly, remember to be kind to yourself. Exams are just one part of your journey, not the whole story. Remember, everyone’s ‘best’ looks different, so focus on you and don’t compare yourself to others.

Support can come in many forms with teams, tools and people available to help if you need it.

Parents, What Can You Do?

If you are a parent with a child or children approaching their exams and wondering what role you can play in supporting them, there are some simple things that may help:

  • Create a calm and encouraging home environment, giving them the space they need to prepare without extra distractions.

  • Help them find the balance between revision and downtime, both are as important as each other and ensuring they have the time to reset will help relieve some of that stress.

  • Get involved where you can, whether it be quizzing them or listening to their learnings, this can really help their progress.

  • Try not to place extra pressure on them, focus on their effort and not solely on grades.

Every student’s journey is different, and success looks different for everyone. Your support, encouragement and understanding can make all the difference in helping your child feel confident and capable during exam season.
